EduSEL's Approach

The objective of EduSEL is to create safe, inclusive, and joyful classrooms that not only retain dropouts and out-of-school children but also support them through secondary education. We train and equip government teachers to embed socio-emotional learning into academics, enabling them to address the diverse social and emotional needs of every child while fostering strong academic growth.

Our goal is to reduce dropout rates and improve learning levels, which supports quality ed

WHAT IS EDUSEL

EduSEL is Education with Socio-Emotional Learning, a program focused on Education, inculcating Socio-emotional Learning (SEL), which aims to develop students' self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills. The program recognises that while academic performance is essential, education should also awaken critical thinking skills, foster self-reflection, and promote healthy relationships to create an integrated life. EduSEL is designed to create a safe space in the classroom where children can express themselves without fear, which helps meet their socio-emotional needs and promotes retention in school.

Why EduSEL?

“The classroom does not feel welcoming. I don’t have the same uniform, so I’m ignored and made to sit at the back. Teachers ask me to fetch water and chalk instead of giving me study work. I’m told I’m late, and I can’t catch up. I wasn’t allowed in the prayer line or to eat mid-day meals, because my documents weren’t complete. I felt like I didn’t belong.”

- Malini, Batch 2021

This is not just Malini's story;  UDISE+ data estimated that approximately 47.4 million children aged 6–17 were out of school in 2023–24. The reasons are a complex mix of socioeconomic barriers, educational system failings, cultural norms, and other factors.

Government school teachers are trained for academic support alone, but it can not solve the dropout crisis. Unless classrooms become safe, inclusive, and nurturing, children will continue to leave. Therefore, we created EduSEL — Education with Socio-Emotional Learning.
